Softening up Mr. Robot

Softening up Mr. Robot
A publisher came to us and asked if we could create a soft and cuddly version of their children's book robot character. Our answer was, "Sure!" However we knew a robot is inherently not cuddly.
"Are you sure you want to take the soft and cuddly route vs. the hard metal/colorful plastic route?"
The reply, "No, we want a huggable robot to go with our book."
That set the stage for us getting to know the character better. We reviewed early illustrations before they went to press. We needed to match the images as close as possible. That meant finding fabrics with a shiny, metallic surface and textiles with ridges that would mimick the robot's limbs. We changed a few small details but kept the essence of the character.
Take a look at this video. You'll get a good idea of the steps we took to soften up Mr. Robot.
